Our Story
Rocco, with his dynamic and alert manner soon became a small trader of all kinds of goods: wine, anchovies, salt cod, wheat, and finally a commodity that was fundamental to him and would accompany him for most of his life: oil. He himself defined it as "the first ingredient a cook must take to start a good recipe!"
Oil also proved to be his passion in one of his sons who, not by chance, was called Nunzio Junior. It was 1950 when Mr Rocco Zaino, with his son Nunzio, began to frequent the oil mills. Those were the years of reconstruction, having just come out of a long war, and at that time it was not easy to move from one place to another. With their willpower, however, nothing was impossible for people of that era. In a short time, Nunzio stayed close to his father and frequented oil mills and farmers on a daily basis from the age of 11, developing a very refined palate. His sacrifice, his daily commitment to oil, led him over the years to the highest levels of palate.
Many years have now passed since Mr Nunzio Zaino Senior rented carriages on Via Garibaldi back in 1880 to people who came to Popoli for spa treatments in those days. When Mr Nunzio Senior also began to devote himself to a refreshment point that included a place for people to stay with their animals and a place to spend the night or several nights, the year 1920 had arrived; shortly afterwards, the first hostel was established, which was growing in size given the proximity and importance of thermal cures at the time.
This activity led Nunzio and, later in the years, his son Rocco to start another business: the food trade. With the running of the small catering establishment, the first large-scale trading of goods began. His keen interest in trading in these goods led his son Rocco, who by then had become a young man, to start a full-fledged trade with food outlets as the years went by.
This allowed him to compose important and refined blends. The 1960s arrived and Nunzio, together with his brothers (Mario and Guerino), enlarged the wholesale business by setting up a company in Popoli to bottle oil. The 1960s and 1970s were a succession of successes for Nunzio in the world of oil. His perseverance and sacrifices were rewarded with an endless series of awards and commissions. He had become one of the most important oil brokers at the Pescara and Abruzzo commodities exchange. He was appointed to the commission of oil tasters for 30 consecutive years. Oil... his true and only... passion!

Our company is based in the municipality of Popoli. A medieval village known for its agricultural traditions, witnessed by its excellent wine, but also leaves room for small industry and, above all, tourism. Rich in history, monuments and above all water, Popoli embodies the Abruzzese spirit of authenticity and passion. A spirit that we at Zaino Rocco Srl have made our own.
